The Sean Combs biography is dominated by his work as a singer/songwriter, and a producer. He was born in New York, in the Harlem area - and was raised by his mother. His mother was a former model, who cared for him as a single mother when his father was murdered in 1974. He attended a Catholic boy's school in the Bronx, being brought up as a Catholic. It was here that he received his nick name 'Puffy', in high school, because of his habit of trying to make his body look bigger, by 'puffing' out his chest. This unusual way to obtain a nickname saw him become known around the world as 'Puff Daddy'.
Combs achieved a major in Business Administration at Howard Univeristy, where he produced weekly dance parties, and ran an airport shuttle service - without compromising his studies. Later, in order to take advantage of an internship at Uptown Records, he dropped out. It was this decision in the Sean Combsbiography that led him to a position in Uptown Records.
He quickly became Vice President and had huge success in producing records for many key artists. Uptown thrived, but Combs soon left in the early 1990s.
Soon after, in 1993, he began his own record production company, entitled Bad Boy Entertainment. He worked with the now well-known and loved Mariah Carey, Method Man, New Edition, Boyz II Men, Li'l Kim, Babyface, TLC, Aretha Franklin, Faith Evans and rapper Biggie Smalls. Three years later, Combs was chosen as ASCAP's songwriter of the year - a huge achievement for a man who seemed to come out of nowhere. And just one year later, Bad Boy Entertainment had sold nearly $100 million worth of recordings, and had a multi-million dollar deal with Arista Records, for the management of the label.
Combs' first album, No Way Out, was released shortly after the death of his friend (and recording artist) Biggie Smalls. It was this time in 1997 that his album reached platinum status, and his tribute record for Biggie Smalls, 'I'll Be Missing You' topped the Billboard singles chart for six weeks.
Two years later, Combs and his then-partner Jennifer Lopez were thought to have been involved in a shooting in a New York nightclub. Combs was charged with four counts of possessing an illegal firearm - and on top of that, he was charged with bribery. It was alleged that Combs had offered Wardel Fenderson (his driver) $50,000 to say that the loaded firearm belonged to him.
Some two years later, all charges were cleared, and it was to be seen that a young rapper, Jamal 'Shyne' Barrow' was accused (and later charged) for firing without thought and particular aim, inside of the nightclub where Combs was previously alleged to have been involved with the shooting. Jamal Barrow was found guilty of reckless endangerment and criminal weapon possession, along with assault - but cleared of the more serious charge of attempted murder.
This controversy temporarily put the recording label comprising the Sean Combs biography into a slump, but still managed in 2002 to release 'We Invented the Remix' and later 'Bad Boy's 10th Anniversary : The Hits'. The slump began to end, however, in 2006 when he released 'Press Play' featuring Brandy, Timbaland and Mary J. Blige - and now, he is going from strength to strength once more.
